Big Hungary Carp – Our Euro Aqua Adventure with Carp Social
Carp Social | Feature Date: 7th October 2018
🏆 A Carp Angler’s Dream: Euro Aqua, Hungary.
Every carp angler dreams of that one special trip — the venue where legends are made. For us, that destination was Euro Aqua in Hungary, home of the Horváth family and the current world record carp, a jaw-dropping 49.1 kg (108 lb) giant.
Thanks to a bit of luck, good timing, and some very “carpy” friends, we managed to land a booking at what’s widely regarded as the best carp lake on the planet.
As always, we’d heard the rumours: overstocked, overhyped, or impossible to book. But rather than listen to hearsay, we packed the van, hit the road, and went to see it for ourselves.
🚗 The Road to Hungary.
Our carp fishing holiday began with a 2,200-mile European road trip from the UK to Hungary. We took the P&O Ferry from Dover to Calais, then crossed France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, stopping overnight in southern Germany to recharge.
By day two, we were deep into Austria — where we learned all about Vignettes (the small toll sticker you need to drive there) — before finally rolling into Hungary late Sunday evening.
We checked into a small, friendly local hotel with secure parking and English-speaking staff. After two long days of driving, we still couldn’t resist a walk to the nearby river. Torch in hand, I spotted a few grass carp gliding through the weed — a promising sign of what was to come.
Dinner was simple: Zander and chips, a Hungarian twist on the classic fish and chips. Then it was time to rest — Euro Aqua awaited us at sunrise.
First Impressions of Euro Aqua.
🎯 The Stock?
- World record carp – 49.1 kg (108 lb)
- Two more fish over 100 lb
- Around 200 carp over 80 lb+
Our draw gave us Peg 3, offering deep water at 100 yards and access to a productive mid-lake area. To the left lay a narrow channel beside a snaggy island, while a gentle shelf began at 30 yards to the right — perfect variety for the week ahead.

Euro Aqua Carp Fishing: Everything You Need to Know About Hungary’s Legendary Lake
How to Catch Big Carp at Euro Aqua: Rules, Records, and Angler Tips for Hungary
Catching big carp at Euro Aqua requires careful planning, knowledge of the lake, and the right approach. Anglers should focus on key feeding areas, such as deeper water around islands and mid-lake channels, using Euro Aqua-approved boilies, maize, and tiger nuts. Popular rigs include Ronnie rigs and 35–40cm leaders, with marker poles used to target precise spots. The lake’s rules, including a limit of three rods per angler and barbless hooks only, ensure a fair and challenging fishing experience. With an estimated 200 carp over 80lb, including multiple 100lb+ specimens, Euro Aqua is a bucket-list destination for any serious carp angler looking to land trophy fish in Hungary.
